The Rise of Somali Engineers in the US

The United States has long been a destination for talented individuals seeking to advance their careers and education. Among them, Somali engineers have made significant strides. Many arrived with strong academic backgrounds and a passion for technology and problem-solving. Over time, they have integrated into various sectors, including civil, electrical, mechanical, and software engineering.

Among the earliest Somali engineering pioneers in the United States was Eng. Abdi Sulayman, who arrived in New York City in 1982 and was one of only two known Somali engineering students in the city at the time. Pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering at City College of New York, he navigated the challenges of adapting to a new country and educational system. While the academic rigor itself was not an obstacle due to his excellent foundational education Somalia, he faced significant bureaucratic, financial, and cultural challenges as he worked to establish himself and pursue his engineering education. Building a Supportive Community for Somali Engineers in the US

The presence of Somali engineers has grown tremendously since the days of Eng. Abdi Sulayman, but the job is not done. We must continue to increase our reach, visibility, and presence in the engineering field and ensure that our communities and people are acknowldged for their contributions and excellence.

One of the keys to success for Somali engineers in the US is the strong sense of community. Our Somali Society of Engineers plays a crucial role in this regard as we finally have a platform for networking, mentorship, and professional development.

By connecting engineers across different disciplines and experience levels, we hope to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing.

For those just starting their careers or still in school, having access to mentors who understand their unique challenges is invaluable. It helps build confidence and opens doors to opportunities that might otherwise be difficult to find.

Here are some practical ways to get involved and benefit from this community:

Looking Ahead: Empowering the Next Generation

Our community’s future depends on nurturing the next generation of Somali engineers. Education is the foundation for this effort. Encouraging young people to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields is vital.

The Somali Society of Engineers will continue our work in supporting Somali Engineers and the next generation by:

• Providing scholarships for Highschool seniors who intend to apply to engineering majors to offset the cost of college tuition.

• Offering internships and hands-on training opportunities.

• Creating mentorship programs that connect students with professionals.

• Promoting STEM awareness through school visits and community events.

  
  

Together, we can build a pipeline of talented Somali engineers who will continue to advance the profession and contribute to Somali communities worldwide.
