The Somali Society of Engineers (SSE) is pleased to announce an upcoming professional development presentation, “Becoming the Example: The Power of Role Models,” featuring Mohamed Salah, P.E., P.Eng. The presentation will take place on August 16, 2026, at 11:00 AM CST (7:00 PM EAT) via Zoom.
The presentation will examine the important role that mentorship, professional leadership, and positive role models play in the development of engineers and the advancement of the engineering profession. While technical knowledge and professional qualifications are essential to an engineer’s career, the influence that experienced professionals have on students, early-career engineers, colleagues, and their communities can be equally significant.
Mentorship provides an opportunity to transfer knowledge and experience, develop professional confidence, and help emerging engineers navigate the challenges of education and professional practice. Likewise, engineers who demonstrate integrity, professionalism, excellence, and a commitment to service can serve as powerful examples for those entering the profession.
The presentation will emphasize that being a role model is not limited to individuals in senior leadership positions. Every engineer has an opportunity to influence others through their actions, willingness to share knowledge, commitment to professional excellence, and support for the next generation.
About the Presenter
Mohamed Salah, P.E., P.Eng., is a licensed professional engineer in the State of Nevada, USA, and the Province of Ontario, Canada, with approximately 30 years of professional experience.
His career includes extensive experience in pre- and post-bid engineering, process design, and project management, with a particular focus on municipal and industrial water and wastewater projects. His professional experience spans multiple regions, including the United States, Canada, Asia, and the Middle East.
Drawing on three decades of engineering practice and project leadership, Mohamed will share professional perspectives and lessons learned about the importance of mentorship, leadership, and setting a positive example for others.
The Importance of Mentorship
The impact of mentorship and positive role models is critical to the continued development of engineering education and professional practice. Experienced engineers have an important responsibility to contribute to the development of future professionals by sharing knowledge, providing guidance, encouraging professional growth, and creating opportunities for others.
For the Somali engineering community in particular, strengthening these connections can help build a stronger pipeline of engineering students and professionals while encouraging greater participation, collaboration, and leadership within the profession.
The presentation will encourage attendees to consider not only the role models who have influenced their own careers, but also the responsibility they have to become role models for others.
